I can either grow 1 pumpkin plant in a 1,000 square foot space or 2 pumpkin plants each in 500 square foot spaces in my best growing location. I've always been reluctant to grow just one plant in an all or nothing approach. But, is there any hope of getting a real giant in only a 500 square foot space? Who has had good experiences with spaces in the 400-600 square foot range? How big were you able to get your pumpkin in those smaller spaced lots? Thanks!

you could try an 800 and 200. They have been getting 700+lbs out of the 150sq ft contests. and 800 is enough to grow a big pumpkin.

Youll grow a bigger fruit potentially with 1000 square feet but with two plants youll have a pumpkin at season end twice as often. So it depends on your goals.Win a contest vs scare the neighbors size fruit and great halloween display.and yes whatever q tip suggests:)

Hey Yellowvine, sorry to be late posting on this question, I am in the same position as you...Take a look at my diary, it shows fairly well how to grow and groom your plant in a smaller (400-600 sq ft) space/plant.
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=253602
The link above shows my upper patch...20 x 25 and the pumpkin was at 15' on the main vine with 8 secondaries on each side 12' each. So roughly 375 sq ft of soil.
This year we grew 1077 lbs, last year was 1068 lbs and previous year was 1126 lbs all in that same spot.

The lower patch is moderately larger and the plant can get as big as 600 sq ft, and it grew 1029 lbs this year and several over 1000 lbs in the past few years.
Build your soil, follow a moderate fertilizer program and most of all...get a mentor to guide you if you are a newish grower.
Best of luck...I hope you see this message and check out my diary, I think I chronicalled how I grow, and groom my plants fairly well to help another small patch grower.
