June 20th pollination was the new July 10th is June 1st the new June 20th
Should us southern boys be aiming for even earlier pollination dates?

That's an interesting point. Has pumpkins growth period actually increased? I wonder if the long-time growers have noticed that change over time.

The sooner you start the the sooner they are done... I like 90 to 110 days old

Is this still true big city? how many people have pumpkins still growing when picked for the weigh off? Looking through the diaries it seems like there are some very green plants when the pumpkins are picked.

I know 90-110 is what we used to think for pumpkin growth but we used to think a lot of things.

Mine was still going at Day 100 when picked last week.

I think the question you have to ask yourself, do I want 7-10 more days of growth in June, or do I want those 7-10 days of growth in October on a old plant in cool weather.

It's a gamble on the weather, but I'm taking that week in June. I got lucky with great mid October weather this year and got the growth but that's no annual guarantee.

We typically have a frost by mid September in most parts of our state.. but not the last 2. Mother Nature has the biggest impact..

The closest weight off to me is always the first Saturday in October. We are starting to get prime pumpkin growing weather 85/65 in late September. If you were me, when would you plant? I could plant outside April 1 easily.

Thanks Gary. The 1625 was a nice plant. No problems all year with the leaves...still green and healthy when cut.

540 pounds after Sept 1st, but we got lucky with some great fall weather up here.

What I've been wondering is if us Southern Fellas should think about starting seeds in March...and putting the plants out early April. It seems to me that our weather around that time is comparable to you guys around the end of April beginning of May. I think it was John Barlow up in Wisconsin that weighed a 1500 pounder in August/early september...I think that he proved that it can be down.

I think the slower they are growing at the end sets them up for rot and disease
