Pumpkin Envy

I am thinking about asking my farmer neighbor if I can work out something with him to grow a small patch at the edge of one of his fields that is adjacent to my property. I only have room for 1 plant on my property. This could provide me enough space to grow 1 or 2 additional plants.

We have always gotten along and have a neighborly relationship.

I was looking for advice from others that may have worked out any similar type of arrangements. What arrangements were you able to agree on and how did it work out for both parties?

Thank you for any advice you may have.

I have access to property . Depends on the person that owns it. My only concern with putting in too much effort to land is he almost sold it.

With it being adjacent to my property, my hoses would reach, for watering.

Would herbicides/pesticides the farmer uses possibly come in contact with the pumpkins plants?

I grew a plant at a neighbors property a few years ago.everything was fine in till it was time to harvest
the he told me to get off his property . He keep the pumpkins for himself.

Whatever he sprays would be in my backyard patch at this time, so I wouldn't have any other pesticide/herbicide/fungicide issues than I already do.

His field abuts my property. My current patch goes to the edge of the property; so I'm thinking about asking about the part of his field that is right there. It is in a corner, so it is hard for him to make the turns anyways.

My bigger question is the negotiation. Making a deal. What to offer, etc... I'm curious if anyone else had any formal arrangement with someone to do this.

Thanks again.

SCHWEIGERT, that is a shame about your neighbor keeping the pumpkins. I'm sorry to hear you had that bad of an experience.

taking a quick look on the net ,farmers pocket $50 per acre of land. I would try to make it where its not a inconvenience for him to till around and combine

SCHWEIGERT, hope you shot them up with a BB gun, the pumpkins not the owner

we did this with our neighbor several years ago and grew 2 on her property, the deal was we would give her one after it was weighed for her family to have. Worked well, considering doing it again.

We have a fellow grower, growing on our 5 acre property. He drives 2 hrs every weekend to spend a day working on his patch. The only thing was that he would have to supply is his own water, so he brought in a 2500 gal tank & gets it filled every 2 weeks. It's been a great having another grower there to discuss patch issues with. He's been growing here for over 5 years without any problems & we hope this partnership continues for many more years.

My farmer loved it so much he let us buy 1 acre from him.. We use about 8000 sq ft and he farms the rest for free... But he has to do fall tillage on our spot.. Plus he has a much better yield on our acre as we amend the soil and keep the soil moist even in real dry conditions.. Now that we have a new 10 acre spot to grow on he will get the whole acre to work now.. For free so he came out way ahead.. Land around here is expensive.. So 1 acre cost 18000 so I feel he really did get the best deal
