Second year grower here, would love to hear some advice on this. I've got a pumpkin that is right about 1000 pounds . I think that it's big enough to compete at the small local weigh off. I just need it to last 4 more weeks. I noticed today that the main vine had split and rotted right where the pumpkin stem connects to the vine. I cut out the mush, cleaned with peroxide and stuffed it with sulfur powder. As of now, the stem is still in good shape and free of rot but I'm afraid it's going to spread to the stem/pumpkin. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Cutting off the vine at this point seems drastic...

I would say also treat w captan powder and keep it dry w a fan blowing on it.. Should halt its progression...best of luck with that beast

The biggest problem that I see growers make when dealing with rot is not removing enough material. You have to get all the rot/brown gunk gone. All that's should be left is green vine/stem. I then spray a 25 to 40 percent solution of Zerotol on it. Then put a fan on it until dry and then some. I don't use any type of powder, I want to be able to see the wound. Ron

The best way to make sure you remove all of the rot is take a new tooth brush and a bottle of purified water and scrub I'll the rot out. Then proceed with fan and sulfur.
