Late planting..good genetics..want to cut a secondary near the stump that is almost as long as the main. It is rooted well.no terts but about 15' long. Want the genetics. I ran my prizewinners last year onto mill fabric so no weeding and got a 150 lbs. Not looking for big ..just the genetics. Looking to keep as much going to the main as possible. Circumfrance at 34" 13 DAP on the main with pollination on 7/14. I've got good genetics in my personal patch and am looking towards next year. Start up costs first year growing was way more than I expected. Thought I should have bought the boat..but 30 lbs of fillets from my row boat with elactric motor. Retirement is all right.

Cant find the questionmark at the right position which would then tell me what the actual question was/is, but anyway, I´ll try to give an answer and hope it will be the answer to the hidden question (anything I can win???...just kidding.)

A nicely rooted secondary is fine, but I would pollinate the female on the secondary first and let it grow until maybe day 15 to see that it really starts to grow. Within that time it won´t withdraw too much power/juice from the main, but the connection to the main makes this secondary feel strong and that could be supportive for a successful pollination. Then, after 15-20 days, cut the secondary off from the main, it will continue to support your genetics pumpkin (which will continue to grow slowly) and the biggest flow of juice will still go into the main.

Sorry for no question marks but you were right with your guess! I've got 2 pollinated on that secondary..BigNOrange all the way. If you don't win the prize I'm sure you'll be eligible for a seed or two. Soon to be posted to my diary with genetics...can we say 681 HD 1912 Carter and 823 House.

So much going on I forgot I just posted that question. Thanks for the earlier responses. I can see my spaghetti squash throwing out roots as I'm growing it up the fence. Looking more for genetics than size on the secondary. The 359 Foss speaks all about genetics.
