Hi I'm a first time grower and made quite a few mistakes with my giant pumpkins, however I have ended up with 2 fruits on two separate plants. I'm pretty sure I'm going to loose one of them as I failed to keep it from growing on its vines and since the stem is now under the fruit I expect it to rot. I posted some photos in the growers diaries Eileen from British Columbia (New) Any advice would be appreciated thankyou

We have had some "birdbath" pumpkins that grow on the stem and have the blossom sink in. You need to dig out under the vine to take the pressure off and keep water out of the blossom. Here is a photo of my son's pumpkin from 2010: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=146836 You can see from the weeds he didn't give it a lot of care, we estimated 70# and it went 866.5# We dug a hole under it and it survived just fine.

I grew one like that back in the day.600 pound "worst wheel ever" right on top of the stem/vine. I dug a trench for them to set in.You can prob do some of that from the sides-it may not need much
