I know we just had a post on this but being a horticulture major I wanted to know if anyone has any information on this theory or cam point me where I can find research on it!....
I might do my senior project on day and night fruit growth!

No Biology major, but I believe it is called photosynthesis.:)Something about sunlight, CO2 and water.

Photosynthesis is during the day but the cycle of growth occurs at night alot more than photosynthesis going in Shannon lol

I don't get a lot of night.. but do get pretty good growth... thinking a total dark period isn't needed for decent growth...

In 2010 I had measured my pumpkin in the morning and in the evening every day, always having about 12 hours between the measurements. The gains during day and night were similar.
In areas/years/summers with very high daytime temperatures it might be different, during daytime the plants will need more water for evaporation/cooling, that hasn´t been the case in my 2010 pumpkin season.

The scales won´t lie, therefore it might be easiest to study the day/night effect with a pumpkin between day 10 and day 20 on some kind of bathroom scales, a reading every morning and evening and, during daytime in shorter intervals, could give you an idea of the growth curve´s ups and downs depending on daytime.

So with this info we could figure out when would be best to fertilize to get the maximum effect on fruit growth.

I think the question originally stated was where research could be found on fruit growth at night. I have provided one the sites I used during my graduate engineering research for my thesis defense. There are some really interesting studies on night time growth cycles. Hope this helps.

mine has been growing over 75% at night. temps have been in the hundreds for weeks with no humidity. I measure at 8am and 8 pm

not much research involved! All you need is a tape! Measure every 12 hours and your research is complete....lol

Yeah not really measuring Donkin, a lot more science involved than that.
Beside measuring is not a very accurate method to conduct data to much room for error.

2 people have grown pumpkins and weighed them while growing. Bill Bobier grew one in a sling with an in-line scale connected to a computer many years ago. Andy S grew one on a platform scale last year. I would bet they know when the pkns grew....

Awesome! I'll have to try to get ahold of them! It would be interesting to see how tomato, Mellon, and other fruiting crops are affected as well.

Tanner, you'll need to be more specific when stating your hypothesis. Way to many variables. Just using terms day and night are to broad in scope.

I agree! When I start compiling data I'll need to very specific with terms and data. Just want to hear what people think and get some starting sources to look for data.

Smallmouth I might take you up in that offer! I won't be needing it until next year. I got to figure out a good weigh to test the theory...don't think I'll be able to grow a pumpkin or squash in the greenhouse at my college lol

i grow in a greenhouse, and my pumpkin sets atop of a 4x4 scale ---i can tell you that wt. gain is all over the place , but mostly at nite ---temp ,water amount, fertz. and sun play a big part in wt. gain . its not cut and dry , but most of the time its 3/4 at nite and 1/4 in the day

the plant being propery hydrated is very important,a pumpkin growing in 90°+ heat may have a hard time growing in the day and put on more at night when it can rehydrate itself.compaired to cooler temps of 75-85° where its conditions are optimal for a pumpkin you may have more daytime growth.

great video !!! the pumpkin does appear to be doing most of its growing at night ? i would like to see a video from Alaska to see how that one would look being very little night hours ?

I've never been to Alaska. Just a thought though. Does the sun peak at a certain hour during the summer, and then come close to setting? If so, maybe more growth occurs during the time period when the sun is at a lower angle.
