ok everyone is talking about anthesis and I can't find much on the subject. do you have to make it? when should you use it n how much? what is it made out of? I get what happens more cell division in younger stage slower growth when small then gets more growth when it's bigger. thanks just wondering.

Get it only from Matt DeBacco. I tried it on 2 pumpkins this year: 1 aborted and one the whole plant died. A risk you take as it is applied once 48 hours after pollinating. You never know at 2 days if it will grow or abort. I will try it next year, as results last year were pretty good.

Go to team-pumpkin.org. All the info you want to read is there. All my pumpkins have anthesis treatment.

Hi CaZ Zac-

Anthesis is the name of a spray that I developed based on many different research articles that I have read over the years. It is essentially a plant hormone spray that increases the rate and duration of cell division in a pumpkin. It seems that normal cell division stops around day 20 in a pumpkin and from then to the weigh-off there is mainly cell expansion that results in the pumpkin growth that we see.

Now, as a result of increased cell division (not expansion) if you compare two pumpkins one sprayed and the other (control) non-sprayed the one that was treated with Anthesis will be smaller for the first 35 (or so) days. However, after this time the Anthesis treated pumpkins growth rate will not only be faster but sustained into the growing season longer. I know this is a hard concept for giant pumpkin growers to understand as we all want the biggest pumpkin possible at all stages of growth but trust me the key to a new personal best is in the later season growth and not a big day 10 or 20 number.

There was a tremendous amount of time spent to not only get the exact hormone balance and ratio correct but also the timing which is very important. As Iowegian mentioned apply Anthesis 48-hours after pollination as this matches the natural cellular process that is occurring in the pumpkin. I know this is before we as growers know if the pollination "took" or not, but you have to think positive and do multiple pollination just in case. Thanks Mike F. for giving my product a chance in your patch.

Here are some links to more information as I only take advanced orders due to the preparation details I want to make a complete batch up all at once.

I know there is a lot of information here, but you can start with the Anthesis 2015 Review that shows graphs of grower reported data and then go from there for more details...

Anthesis ain't doing nothing to slow down my early (day 10) numbers. 34cc day 10? Maybe anthesis is keeping me from blowing up lol.

CaZ Zac-

Watch bigpumpkins.com message board in early January as this is when I will first be taking orders. Due to the protocol I use in the preparation I need to know how many treatments to make and then do the math out and make a batch up to ensure consistency. There is a shelf life, one component is good until September and the other is good until December of this year. After this time (assuming the proper storage conditions are met) the product essentially breaks down and becomes a fraction of its former self. Also, looks like you may have found a local grower that is willing to share some extra doses they have. It is always nice to see a Team support between growers.

Orangeneck-

Hope you are on your way to a new personal best!
