Subject:  Treat main as secondary past the fruit ?

Is it a good or OK idea to treat my main vine as a secondary past my set pumpkin (allowing no more secondaries to grow off it} if I already have plenty of secondaries to quickly fill my remaining allotted space ? The only disadvantage I am able to think of is if I were to lose the stump then the extra growth might come in handy but I am willing to risk that.

personal preference. I like to let a few secondaries grow on the pumpkin side of the main to help fill out the plot..But I do grow a basic spider pattern

I don't let any seconds grow on main past kin unless as cojoe says I need to fill in an empty spot, just the main and let the last 4 or 5 sides just before the kin on each side swing forward to fill the patch in
