With deep regret I would like to let everyone know that the Pennsylvania Giant Pumpkin Growers Assn. has lost our president and one of the founding fathers of the club, Galen Helsel. He passed away suddenly at home this morning.
May he rest in peace.

Galen was one of the original growers involved in the formation of the PGPGA. He was the only President we ever had. Galen was a person who never said no. He did what ever was needed of him. Galen was employed by the Altoona Hospital for more than 40 years in the pulmonary and then the cardiology department. Besides that, he operated a small family farm, following in his father's footsteps. He had cows, horses, chickens, grew crops including corn and oats and what have you including a family garden. He had not been well for many years and long ago had heart surgery. His back had been destroyed by hard work. Despite all of this he was quite active and was president of a credit union, was an officer in a trail riding club, was an auditor for the township and for years was active in the hospital union as an officer and member. He and his wife had four children, tons of relatives and a wide range of good friends. He worked on the farm until the day he passed. Galen was a good guy and he will be missed.
