You should shade the main vine tip at all times. For me that is simply moving a chair forward 8-12 inches a day.

Curious about this. I have never had a tip get burned. when does this become a problem? Is it more a southern thing because of more and maybe hotter sun. I have covered the pumpkin and could tell what parts got sun during the day and what didn't.

I am not in the south (southern Midwest- Missouri), but have had vine tips burn out when the plant is not well rooted. Your entire season from a competitive point of view is based on that tip so why not protect it?
