I noticed on Pete and Cindi's(tumbleweeds) diary they bury with a little mud---this sounds like a very good idea to me, as I have always done it with a dry mix, and often watering can erode my burying, causing me to re-bury. Do others also do this?

Mud always turns to concrete in the summer Sun just my experience.

Kurtis, that is exactly why we are using the mud. If we don't use the mud the soil comes off the vines before the roots have taken hold. We will remove the mud dirt later. Good luck! We will at least use "moist soil "to cover with as the season progresses. We hope to find moist soil close to where we are burying as hauling buckets of mud can get old fast!

If you use a dry mix to bury vines it helps to gently water it this will make it cake up and be harder for a down pour to wash it off

Thanks all, I think I'll use a "light mud mix" over my vine burying nutrients this year.

I've read in IanP's older diary entries something similar - moist peat / compost. Links here:

Some of you new growers are placing way too much dirt over your vines. Just enough to cover the main after your secondaries have started to run. If you cover too deep, you won't get secondaries or male flowers
