Are people keeping back vines (those growing behind the stump) now? Tertiaries?

Not sure exactly what your talking about. If you mean the vines that grow off the first secondaries, and grow them backwards past the stump. Yes I have done that. I don't know if it really has helped but I think it's more plant to help the pumpkin.

I like to fill in the back of the plot with them -they help keep the weeds down

I wonder if Craig F is talking about those suckers that grow off the stump later in the year. If he is I keep a few going at the end of season with the thought that it might avoid stump rot. Just something I do to keep the juice flowing. I dont know if there is any science behind it??
