All but one of my plants this year have extra parts....lol Every other node is a dual leaf....Wider than normal vineZ....I expect this to settle down once they hit the ground and root in....Appears Ill have a few extra side vines to provide some more ummpf...
Wondering perhaps I juiced up the soil a bit....hmmm ... Nah.....Are we pushing these too much? No way....

I believe much of these issues early are from your soil. When your soil is a little on the hot side or you push things a little hard to start, you get this. About 5 years ago everyone one of my plants were a mess because I screwed up with the Calcium Nitrate early. I was able to water the heck out of them and most fix themselves. I never give up on plants now unless every secondary is coming out as a double vine. The 1873 was grown on the 3rd secondary trained as the main because the rest of the vines were screwed up. Again, most of the time this is caused by growers over-fertilizing cold soil. As the soil warms, way to much food available.

Michigan Masher,

I've had that happen in the past. They eventually started putting out good secondaries later on. I'm not sure what causes this. I'm wondering if it could be a lack of available nitrogen for the plant? Just a guess though.

One cause of lack of secondaries is over saturated soil from constant rain.
