I think ag's cross with other pumpkins or squash? I'm asking this because my only options for my 5 year old's ag is a field pumpkin plant or zuchini. Correct me if I am wrong, but they will cross correct? Thanks, Jim

Anything in the cubitus family will cross with it, but you are probably best off to self it (i.e. use a male flower from the same plant to pollinate the female flower).

I'll keep praying for a male flower for your boy.

From what I understand, squash only cross between the same species. I don't know if there are any exceptions to this? The A.G. pumpkin is of the maxima species. I think field pumpkins and zucchini are both of the pepo species. Other squash of the maxima species are Buttercup and Blue Hubbard. Someone correct me here if I'm wrong please.

I think you are right, Doug. I thought an FP would not cross with an AG.

Why not self it?

Zucchini and field pumpkins are both C. pepo. Atlantic Giants are C. maxima so I don't think the pollen will work. That being said. I do know that there are plant breeders who have successfully made some crosses between species.
Like Linus said The surest thing would be to self it. I don't think a zucchini or field pumpkin will take.

I'd love to self it guys, but like I said, it's not an option when you have no male flowers on your plant that has pollen:)

From past experience a plant with no male flowers will almost always abort the fruit as well even if you get pollen from another plant. It's always a good idea to keep your backups going until you see signs of male flowers starting, especially if you only grow 1 or 2 plants.
