Someone asked me if I use them in the patch and I don't. I heard good things about them for lawns. Do any growers use them for any purpose in the patch?

I believe they're looked at as a negative in the pumpkin world.

There are beneficial and harmful nematodes. I've only read something about adding beneficials for bill bugs in lawns. Mostly it's about controlling the harmful ones. They chew on the roots and cause damage for infection to enter, plus reduce the roots. Some of the bacillus bacteria strains have nematicidal properties.

Nematodes can be a great way to fight some soil pests. But in my experience it is very specific as to the target and timing. Just throwing some expensive biological controls at your soil will not necessarily work. Timing is everything. The target pest has to be there and the temps and moisture have to be in the correct range. I have used nematodes for wire worm. I don't know how effective it was. They are a real problem here. Your local agricultural extension and government agricultural publications should have the info specific to your area.

We use them for scarid fly control which most people won't have a problem with. If you are looking at using friendly bugs to fight bad guys they do work very well but you will need a 3 pronged attack and a programme to introduce them. Ian
