I want to till my winter rye as the plants grow. How long before I plant should I till my rye?

we till an area approximately four ft wider and deeper than the surrounding area around the green houses we will put down.

then just before huts come off we till an additional ten or more feet away from the removed greenhouses.

depending on your area step two could be a complete finishing off of the tilling --- its a matter of personal choice and size of area allocated for each plant.
(the bigger the plant area the more you can hold off on a complete amending and tilling)

That's about what I had in mind but was wondering if I till a week before I plant, two weeks, the day before. T

we till and amend the hut area two weeks before we anticipate putting plants out.(weather permitting - to avoid soil compaction never till really wet soil)

at that time we also put in heat cables to allow time to warm the soil before planting.

the huts plus heating cables allow for a better soil temp at time of planting.

Thanks Pap. I know you know what you're talking about. I checked Ron's Diary and was figuring 10-14 days. The one patch is 40' x 100' and I;m going to till 10' right down the middle and add to that. I'm am a week or two weather wise behind you guys. Still get frost in June. I've gardened for over thirty years and appreciate the advice on what I don't know. I be learnin'. Thanks, T
