Today it cost $13.50 for one bubble envelope to go to Germany. I questioned the clerk as it was $5.84 in January. Nope another rate increase. A Class Letter is one $2.38.

This is why I do not order items from the US anymore. You can have items way cheaper from Europe and Asia. USPS postage is killing small business and private sale like on ebay.

Yes just send as a letter.I just sent a couple out last week.$3 No customs form need.Place thin cardboard on each side of seed. I sent 10 out last month to Europe at 13.50 each. The lady at the post office thought I was crazy. She said send them this way for $3 .Now I have to send a 2009 Wallace to Belgium it will go in a 13.50 Bubble in a prescription bottle. I wont take chances on a HOT seed!!

I don't understand how an item can be bought for $5.00 from China and get free shipping, but cost us so much to ship items overseas.

Sorry, but the US-postage is a only mystery for me: Some weeks ago I become a bubble with 7,10$ for airmail and it needs still 14 days, another bubble was stamepd with 2,40$ and needed via Hamburg ( ...by ship!!..) four weeks......
…..and last week I got a bubble with 1,42$ and it was here within 5 days..!!
A real mystery....

No other choice from the US like UPS, TNT, FedEX, DHL? A small paper box (like sending a DVD) could be cheaper maybe.

The problem partly lies in the fact that most countries are giving a hidden subsidy to other countries.

I'll use the U.S.A. as an example. If it costs the usps $4 to deliver a parcel in their system and yet they only get a sum from certain other countries for a parcel , they are operating at a loss. Now in order to make up for that shortfall , guess who pays.
Blame this on those special trade agreements that are not well thought out. The post is usually still the cheapest.

What you might be missing is the fact it all has to go through customs. It could lay in a tub/cart for a day or two or it might lay there for 3-4 weeks. The customs guy must step away from the coffee & donuts to inspect the packages letters etc. So what you pay is not the only factor.

If I order from Germany in Hongkong or China, postage is cheap or free. If you look for tracking, it´s from "Netherland Post" most of the time. I have no idea why, but it works pretty good, apart from delivery time. Never had customs inquiries so far for smaller items within limited value.
