Mine never completely dies but it shrinks down and looks starved in middle of winter then bounces back. We were at 77 yesterday and 75 today and it's already greening up over the past week.

here in rhode island our winter rye stays green all winter long. if your rye was put down to thin or very late and did not get fully developed ? possibly that is why yours is brown ? not sure --we never had that problem. pap

Having grown Rye for many years through the depths of WI winters where -30 is the norm, its highly unlikely to suffer a winterkill event.
Rye will often brown throughout the winter. so long as the root crowns were not disturbed, its highly likely that new growth will emerge once old man winter releases his grip.

There's winter rye--and then there's annual rye. If you planted annual rye, it's dead, and will not grow back.

If it was winter rye you planted it will be fine. Mine is still green, though. We had -13 degrees!
