I have never planted pumpkins back to back. Is there any disadvantage to doing this? Just to be clear I mean haveing main vines growing in opposite directions of each other. I am considering doing this. Any experienced growers out there doing this? Thanks

I plant mine back to back, the stumps are 8 feet apart though.

I grew the the 1947(1317) Back to back with the 1395 Clementz(2009 Wallace)seed.
I grew the 1734(1317) back to back with the 1947(878) Clementz
They were about 6 feet apart. There are different theories. Some think it will make the plants more aggressive. Some think there stealing form each other.most ideas are just theory, hard to prove. What I think is more inmortant is to give the plants 360 degrees of good loose amended soil.In other words dont back your plant up to a driveway or a NOT amended lawn that you wont water. The roots grow 360 degrees in every direction.Dont rototill the soil to close to the plant in all directions.I see a lot of growers chopping up there root system from behind the plant.

And if you don't have the space to get at least a few feet of separation, you can just have them offset, or each plant would be a few feet closer to a side rather then both in the middle. I am going with a 2 foot distance length, and a 4 foot offset this year... or at least I'm thinking about it in preliminary mapping.

I grow mine back to back about 5 ft apart. I started doing it to help avoid foamers. It has helped but when one kin is lost don't pull the whole plant at the same time or you will get a foamer on the remaining stump. What Bubba said about the roots. I think a lot of growers don't realize they are either packing or chopping roots. Get the soil prepared, loose and worked up 6' ahead of any growth and import your soil from at least 6'away to cover vines.
