I am jumping on board with the diluted Round Up approach this year... gonna kill those damn weeds.

Preen is supposed to be hard on new roots so most growers don't use it. I used it on beans and tomatoes. It works good on foxtail but not on broadleaves. Galinsoga seems to explode in growth with Preen. Corn gluten meal is a nitrogen source and a pre-emergence herbicide, might help. You just have to make sure you don't over-apply nitrogen. I think it is about 10% N. I use a shielded roundup spray ahead of the vines. Close to the vines I scrape weeds off with a hoe and apply a thin layer of untreated grass clippings. Once the leaves spread out they shade out most weeds.

You really have to be very careful with Roundup and the wind Ned. Also any residual Roundup on hands, grass, bottom of shoe etc can take a plant out pretty easy... much easier than a weed. Happened here and wiped out 2 of my 6week old plants in 2012. I'm with Linus and Josh on this now.

When we used to plant 3 acres of field pumpkins we used a product called Strategy. Effective but very hard to apply correctly. Killed the neighbors grapes and trees. Blamed it on the corn field

Just do round-up in the early morning. I use a blast shield. It's a 12" tall x 30" wide piece of plywood that I screw to a board as a handle. I hold the plywood to the ground and always have my back to the plants and the sprayer in front of the plywood.

Has worked fine, but no wind. Don't even try it with a breeze. New growth is super sensitive.

round up or spectriside same active ingredient, spectriside is cheaper. I use at full strength. used 5 qrts last year. I even sprayed a leaf on a vine I had cut from plant, leaf did not die but did have spots where round up was sprayed..i really hate weeding.. also I have sprayed stumps and It did not damage it. but not recommended..

I use a weed burner , after fall prep and tilling . I let any weeds germinate ( usually in the top 2 inches of soil )in the spring then just before planting time blast them with the propane torch , instead of burying vines ,I add my compost over the vine ,at the leaf junctions so not to disturb the soil..no glosphate for me

I use generic roundup.. Way cheaper and it works fine.., I have sprayed a plant once just to see what happened... I did grow a 900 pounder off that plant... So do what works for you. I'll use my jug o weed killer any time
