A grower friend is wanting to ship me seeds from Italy to the United States. Does anyone in "Pumpkin Land" know how to do this properly and safely so that I can be certain to receive the seeds. Is there anything specific that he should write on the package or declare for customs? Any guidance or help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Phyto test is the only sure way. Otherwise it is a gamble. Most write garden supplies, or Cucurbita Maxima

I send and receive from Italy all the time.I just write giant Pumpkins on customs and it takes 2-3 weeks to send there. The last post I got from Italy was in a bubble and was just regular delivery with no problems.

If they are just regular trades that can be replaced when customs snatches and destroys them. That is the gamble you are willing to take. If it were for like a 2009 Wallace that you are trading someone, it is a different story. Lots of trades have gone bad because customs destroys them.

Make sure under contents you put merchandise, put a value on $10 and say they're pumpkin seeds in the description of the contents, if there is more then one seed be sure to state the amount of seeds in the package

Just go to the post office and ask the post master for a custom slip to ship overseas

Josiah, it is much different shipping to overseas locations than for overseas locations to ship to the United States.
As Shannon states, without a phytosanitary certificate, customs will destroy them if they catch that they are seeds.

Here is the info on how to obtain a phytosanitary certificate. http://www.fao.org/docrep/004/y3241e/y3241e06.htm https://www.aphis.usda.gov/wps/portal/aphis/home/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/APHIS_Content_Library/SA_Our_Focus/SA_Plant_Health/SA_Export/SA_FAQS

Very true Cecil, I even see the difference when visiting other countries then going through customs re-entering the United States.
