Is there interest in starting a contest? I have a gentlemen who thinks we might find 10 guys willing to put in $35 a piece & have a $350 prize pot.I will post the page at WWGG if we have 10 on board. You can get your own seeds from each other.Just taking a poll to see if there is interest.

A very small area and you better have some patience Mark,,,,, its worse then watching slow dry oil base paint dry on a cool and humid day.
Thats the part that kind of makes it fun though. lol

you are overestimating the space required...i might try growing mine in a 6inch diameter tube...4 feet long. That would take 28 square inches of garden space.

when everyone is in, we can figure out seeds....right now i have about 350 seeds from various sources of "new red intermediate" due in from the uk in the next couple of weeks. If someone wants to grow, the seeds should be available

It isn't about the seeds, but the technique used. Any Flakkee or Berlicum carrot seed will do the trick. They are all readily available in any western country.

Thank you Brad, I placed an order for Berlicum seeds also. I am thinking that this contest should maybe have a bonus for growers that get seed in 2017 from their giant entry of this year.

Here is a question, Do you have to pinch the carrot root when it is small to get it to look like a big mass of snakes coiled together? It seems like most carrots grown for size have this look.

As Brad pointed out giant carrot growing is a matter of technique more than seeds. I believe this is true certainly at my beginner level. I do feel that genetics can play a role in growing the biggest. I have noticed many growers in the UK referring to their seed as reselected of a certain strain. My thought about giving a bonus to the winners that manage to bring their carrot to seed serves two purposes. The first is to keep the good performing genetics in the grower pool. The second is to build a supply of locally grown seed.

Since carrots are a biennial plant it takes two years to get seed. My plan is grow the first year for competition. Refrigerate the best over the winter for vernalization and plant the next spring for seeds. Hope my wife doesn't decide to put my prized carrot in the soup......

big moon i don't believe pruning the root is why they multiply into multiple roots, i beleive its the heavy feeding they give them.true that most of them are transplanted which may tie up their roots and break them too, but i also notice the main plant grows branches and can develop many new leaders and with all these new leaders i beleive is why the roots do the same.multiple roots for multiple branching ?

bnot that sounds like 2 prizes for the same carrot ? the problem is that to weigh the carrot you have to pull it and cut off the top to weigh it them if you wont to get seed from it you have to replant it and hope it survives the winter and go to seed in the spring ! not sure how well that will work after you pull it and cut the top off ? lets see if dan MacCoy has luck with his, i think that it what he is doing now ?

I am pretty sure you need to damage the root tip in order to get the carrot root to branch, just like when you cut the apical meristem off the top of a plant.

wixom...i have been reading a little about getting seeds from carrots..it seems tops can be trimmed 2-4 cm,air dried until no surface moisture exists, then packed into paper bag with wood shavings(sawdust), It will need 6-8 weeks at 2-5 degrees C. then can be planted the next sping and go to seed. Full details are here: http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/seeds.html

Go here guys. Lots of useful information on this website.http://www.giantveg.co.uk/index.php/en/grow-guides
I never trim any tips on mine to make them root out all crazy.
The biggest thing is planting a lot of them then culling down to a couple of the best ones. My 8.47 seedling was far ahead of the other ones at just a couple weeks old.
You need to start early.like the end of February to get anything of size. The main root grows fast to The bottom of the pots so make sure you but them in 4 inch by 16 inches high pvc pipe sooner than later.I broke one because I did this to late last year. Not sure what I'm growing next year so I can't say yes yet :)

There are two methods to get them to fork. One is to pinch off the tip once they get to 6-12 inches. The other is to transplant them. Either way the plant thinks it will die so activates the hair roots growing along the main root. The main root will fill out to the length you cut it off and the hair roots will mature and because of limited space grow in every which way. The idea is to get the main root as big as possible AND have the hair roots grow out. If you cut the tip of the main carrot off too soon you will only have the hair roots. If you cut it off too late, the carrot won't bother activating the hair roots as it can survive on what remains of the main root.
