This week my wife, Sharon, was diagnosed with Lyme disease. She is on the antibiotic doxycycline for 21 days. We have fairly high deer pressure where we plant 18 acres of pumpkins and ornamental squash.
We have read a great deal about Lyme disease but I am wondering if anyone has any first hand knowledge or information including treatment and long term prognosis. Thanks

My dad had it once. He is fine now and nothing ever shows of it.

If it's diagnosed early, chances are excellent for a full recovery.

In the spring of 2006, I went out for a turkey hunt. I came back with a tick. Didnt think anything of it until two years later, when symptoms of fatigue, lack of word recall, random headaches began to emerge. I was positively diagnosed Fall of 2008. Treatment exacerbated the symptoms, a phenomenon called a "Herxheimer response", that is reportedly caused by all the now dead bacteria riling up your immune system to overreact.
6 months of intense antibiotics. not once, but 3 times. and nearly a decade later, I have lab confirmation that the bug is still alive and well in my system.
There's a ton of inflammatory controversy about lyme and whether or not the standard treatment of 21 days of doxy is adequate to remove the bug. Caught early, probably good enuf, as in Tanner's dad's case.
For me, where it laid dormant for 2 years and really imbedded in my system...no so much.
Best advice is to get smart about the disease. Learn it. Learn how to recognize if it pops back up symptomatically. Then find a Dr. who's willing to accept that it can survive a 21 day course of doxy and will work harder to remove it from the system. New York has a ton of "Lyme literate" doctors who see a bigger picture than a simple one-size-fits-all recipe in the handbook of medicine.

Lyme is a huge problem here, every one in the family has had it at least once. It becomes a much bigger problem if it becomes chronic lyme like in Joze's case. The bug can really hide from the antibiotic. Teasel oil is supposed to work symbiotically if taken with the doxy it helps drive the spirochetes out from there hiding spots in the joints so that the so that the antibiotic can do it's job . If the lyme was caught early then the 21 day treatment should suffice. If your wife has had the lyme for a long time, Joze is absolutely correct, she may need to see a doctor who specializes in Lyme. In my experience it is the ticks that we don't find that cause the Lyme. A nymph deer tick is so small they are hard to see and often aren't found. If a tick is found and removed within 24-36 hours, the disease is not likely to be transmitted. Ticks carry other pathogens too, Ehrlichiosis and babeosis among other things. None of them are good. Check for ticks daily before bed.

After many many years of hell..pain like you read about..if you found the rash dox CAN work..but I wouldn't take any chances because antibiotics don't always work , ..schedule an appointment with dr Stephen bock(rheinbeck NY). My daughter's Border Collie has it. He couldn't tolerate the doxycycline. The vet gave him a couple of shots of some other medicine, but said he will probably always test positive for it. Prevention is the best medicine; use insect repellant when ticks are active. And the deer ticks that spread Lyme are very tiny and hard to see. If you ever watched Jesse Ventura's Conspiracy Theory show about Plum Island, you would be upset about how the disease got started. There is lots of evidence that it is a government germ warfare experiment that got away from a sloppily run facility.

I would also add that anyone dealing w chronic fatigue or fybromalisia that can't get it figured out, check for lyme...symptoms are very close to the lyme symptoms ...especially if you have the "brain" farts like joze mentioned...

Jose I get that Herxheimer response every time I measure my pumpkins. You know lethargy, malaise and a tingling in my sphincter(the one at the top of my stomach) lol. Isnt lime spread by a tiny deer tick? very hard to detect.

Yes, Cojoe - The black legged tick is carried by deer, then deposited on weeds waiting for you to walk by. My wife's was under her arm pit. We were able to remove most of it and take it to the doctors office. We are in western NY, between Rochester and Buffalo where Lyme disease is not very common. Thanks Dan, (biscuit ridge)for the info - definitely gives us another route of treatment.

It's spreading quick...there is an area in town along the creek where if you had an outdoor pet, It got the lyme... The DEC put in special feeders for the deer that applied frontline when they reached in to munch some corn.. Decent idea to keep the tick population down..not gonna stop it ...def one of those things to really be aware of when we are playing outside ...btw..great spot for tree stands ...
