What is the biggest AG pumpkin you have grown from a really small Ag pumpkin. Cleaning patch today and there were a couple really late small pumpkins ( 37 and 22 pounds) on my dead 811 Gerhardt plant. They were both completely full of mature seeds. Think I am going to have to plant them next year to see what they will grow.

Great question, one that has been asked more than once. On a similar post Bathabitat ( Scott Holub ) handed me my ___

Being a much smarter guy than me ( at least statistically;) he was able to establish that bigger mothers have produced bigger offspring. While I can't dispute those findings, I can't help but wonder what would happen if a seasoned grower included in his/her line-up a smaller but genetically superior seed for several years. The results could be interesting. Everyone wants to grow the big ones so I doubt this will ever happen.

Joe, I know you grew a 813 off that same plant and it was a controlled cross. Why not grow that one, these are open pollinated right?

I will grow the 823 ( 811 Gerhardt x 359 Foss ) that was a controlled cross in my main patch but will plant another 20 or more in my commercial patch. I am thinking about putting at least one of the small ones in the commercial patch just to see what happens. Ones in the commercial patch just don't get much care.

The 282 Scherber grew the 1478 Holub. This one is a great example of when size matter and when it doesn't. The 282 Scherber seed is a self pollinated clone from the 1725 Harp plant that grew the world record 2009. In other words, it was a cutting of a plant so the genetics were just the same, that Matt Debacco kept alive in a green house during the winter and then shipped it to Joe Scherber who then grew it in a small space just for the seeds. Obviously the genetics are in that seed. Only two pumpkins that I'm aware of have made it to the scale. There were some pumpkins on the way to being big ones that went down for various reasons however.
The 50 Todd was also a late season pollination on a good plant with a very good pollinator. Pumpkin was maybe 50 pounds when it was picked, but I think it was only around 40 days old as I recall.
Always good to know the story on a seed that comes from a pumpkin with a low weight. Sometimes it can be packed full of great genetics.
