Harvested seeds from my 544lb. today. Some of the seeds are split down the side. Does anyone know why this would happen?Frost? Too long in the pumpkin?

I am not sure why this happens but I have seen it too. I had one kin where 3 or 4 dozen did that after being on the drying rack for days. I tried planting a couple and they did germinate but I'm sure wouldn't keep too long.

Monsterdog, I just saw your diary. It almost looks like the seeds were starting to sprout. It looked to me that there was a radicle emerging from the tips on a couple of the seeds you photographed.

monsterdog, Sometimes this happens. I don't know why. The seeds are still good though. Dry them as you would any seed. When germinating they don't need to be soaked for nearly as long. A lot of the 1985 Miller seeds were this way. Ron Root

My 140lb FP sat on the vine mature for 6 weeks. I had a bunch of seeds inside that split the seed coat as if the shell wasnt big enough. I had an AG once with seeds like yours, I think it spent alot of time on the vine as well. Maybe the seed just wouldnt fit. Was your pumpkin a very mature fruit?

I'm with Ron, I don't think these started to sprout. The ones that we have had that started to sprout split the edge and you can usually see the root starting as well as the cots starting to extend out of the seed coat.
If you are worried, dry them as normal, then in a month try to sprout one or two of them.
