It is emotionally difficult to share the details of a traumatic event, notably when I am part of the cause, but in the interest of transparency and the avoidance of inaccuracies, here's what happened. Chris and I were trouble shooting a skid steer that had track motion but the fork hydraulics were not functioning. I was sitting in the operator's seat and Chris stood outside the cab. we were wrestling with the removable glass door when I leaned forward, accidentally pressing the track motion joystick forward. In the blink of an eye and only inches of motion, Chris's leg was caught under the track.

The incident cast a shadow on the entire day and I deeply regret causing injury to one of my best friends, training partners, fellow SCGA board member, and champion pumpkin grower. All of us greatly missed having Chris at the event, as he is a major part of the many milestones our group achieved yesterday, not to mention his contributions to running a seamless, successful weigh off.

Of course, we are all very thankful it wasn't any more severe than it was. And it serves as a potent reminder of how safety needs to be at the absolute forefront of our minds in every aspect of running heavy machinery at weighoffs.
