I expanded my garden this fall it is about 4600 square feet in a big square. How many pumpkins can I put in this area. I had two this year in about half that area. Also do I just plant them equally spaced out or closer together.

I think the real question is how much time do you have? I did 6 plants in 4000 sq ft they kept me plenty busy, fell way behind on weeding, it was almost a small blessing I lost a couple, but still wish they made it. I gave each plant 22'x28'which seem to work.

You could easily divide that up into 6 growing spots. If you keep 2 of them in cover crops each year, you can grow 4 plants each year. Then rotate them so each one gets pumpkins for 2 years and then a year of rest. Will help you build up the soil and prevent disease build-up. Also you could rotate which end of the growing spot you plant in, so you don't have the stump in the same place 2 years in a row.

Thanks mark good idea with the rotation. Might try that. I am putting compost on spot now and I am going to till it this weekend. Congrats again on your pumpkin you brought to anamosa. It was a looker. Do you speed plans out or plans close together and have them grow in different directions.

I have my plots divided up by drain ditches and used to have 2 plants per plot. I would change them around so sometimes that were back to back, other times one at each end growing towards each other, etc. Now I have just one plant per plot and plant the rest of the plot to tomatoes, peppers, or something else. I can move the stump around so it gets planted in the same spot just once in 4 years. The part planted to other crops gets mulched heavily through the season with grass clippings to build up the organic matter soil and hold down weeds. Plus the alternate crops are given mycorhizae to try to get that built up in the soil.

If you want me to send you a sketch of how I do the rotation, send me an email and I will get it to you.
