I am getting a few emails asking what I use to polish my pumpkins. I do not use any substance other than soap and water. I then dry them with a soft cloth, and buff them like an apple. Applying any oil to the surface can disqualify your pumpkin for containing a foreign substance. Not only that it makes them a danger to lift with the straps.
GPC RULES
3.No foreign material (i.e.: fungicides, caulking, skin additives et cetera) will be permitted in the weighing of any fruit. Vines must be trimmed to within one inch of the stem of the fruit. The judges have the right to inspect any and all fruit before weights and measurements become official. Refusal of any inspection to an entry will cause the entry to be classified exhibition only.

I am glad you posted this. I used vegetable oil one year. Didn't know it to be a problem. Better not do that again.

Then you shouldn't apply soap then should you? Sounds like an additive to me....

Mine has a great shine this year.I just buffed it with a towel for 10 minutes, but it seems more to do genetics if it will have shiney skin or not.

Soapy water in my mind is no different than spraying it with a fungicide. I use a Tea Tree Soap.

Just FYI Shannon, tea tree soap is made with tea tree oil...therefore is considered a vegetable oil.

Such a double standard...tea tree oil OK (according to Shannon) but other oils are not....hmmmmm
