Took my 1st giant tomato to Wegmens supermarket here in west Seneca this morning. I cleared use of the scale with the front desk, they thought it was cool. Went to the scale and the produce Nazi immediately ran up to me and told me I couldn't do that. didn't give me a reason other than I was not affiliated with wegmans. Told him I cleared use of the scale with the front desk, didn't believe me and called them. Then told me to finish up and leave and to not come back as its Wegmans rules. I guess the next one goes to topps or tractor supply

Anyway it weighed 2.03#.

I never had a problem with that. Usually once they understand what you are doing and why you are doing it they usually are happy to do it. I did mine at a kroger with no problem.

That's why I went to the front desk so they would understand what I was doing. The front desk was fine with it and I fully explained it to the produce guy (some sort of manager not a high school kid) and he wasn't having any of it. He wanted me out asap and told the front desk that it was not allowed.

I just would not go shopping at wegmans supermarket anymore. They clearly dont care about their customers.

They may have been worried that you were checking the accuracy of their scales , like if you brought in a pre-weighed tomato to compare .

Maybe their scales are "fixed"

Wait...if you had a Retail Grocery Store. Would you want people bringing produce into your store.. I am sure the produce manager was only following the rules as they are written. Which the front desk was not aware of.

I could see them being careful about pesticides/fungacides that may be on such fruit... I know I was thinking about it..taking it to Tony's Meat Market... we used a scale behind the front desk.. but they where cool about it.. Same with the farmers market this weekend as well...

Well the front desk is the manager of the store and was fine with it and wegmans is not just a grocery store it is a huge corporation. The frequency of bringing produce in is essentially nill, I would say they have never experienced it. The issue is more related to a nonsensical approach of 1 individual being quite rude and unnecessarily authoritative and as soon as the front desk told him it was dropped. As far as pesticide I would say there is more merit of 1/4 shelf of produce for sale than what I applied all season.

I was thinking the same as Shannon(Linus). When dealing with food sold to the public, sanitary rules are important. I don't know if this was the issue, or some other concern.

Chris, as for wegmans not caring for the customer they are the #1 grocer in the country. The guys was doing as he was trained, jeff go to tops.

With all of the listeria on veggies I don't think the Health Department would want you bringing things into the store.

Fisherray i agree that wegmans is a fine store, but your employes reflect your image and their is a right way and a wrong way to deal with telling a costomer that they cant do something like this. Im sure being rude is not the way he was trained.i know that if i felt like i was being pushed out the door without an explanation on what i was doing wrong, i would not shop their again.

Before I weighed my tomatoes I went and asked the person at the scale. I was concerned when I asked at a supermarket. They said it would be okay. I also asked at hardware and a feed store. I did go to the supermarket but if I ran a supermarket I would not allow someone to bring a tomato or anything in to be weighted at my deli scale.

Hey Bill, Thanks again for the seeds. I didn't think this post would trigger the number of responses that it has, then again I didn't think weighing it would be an issue with the scales all over the place and getting permission beforehand. It was more a commentary on the employee being less than courteous for no good reason. I guess the story is stay away from wegmans and ask more then 1 person if its ok to weigh.
