For those growers that have a good one on the vine, think about getting a cutting/clone for your plant going that could be taken indoors or into a greenhouse during the winter and kept going into the next season. If you think about that kind of thing now you could keep those genetics going and get some really great crosses the next season.

I've loved what Matt Debacco has done with his cuttings and I wish more growers would do it. Joe Scherber has made some very interesting crosses with those cloned plants. I have a 1775 Starr that was crossed with Ron Wallace's 1725 plant that grew the 2009. Just think if you could cross next year's plants with plants from this year that produced 1,800+ pound pumpkins and when you pollinated you KNEW the genetic potential rather than hoping and guessing that what you pollinated with was anything good. Could take the sport to a whole new level more quickly.

Word to the wise. I'm not aware of any clone plants producing any big pumpkins the next season. They aren't going to have the root structure to to do that. If you grow a clone grow them as pollinators. You will have some very interesting seeds to grow the next season if you approach it that way.

Ditto to Tconway. Hope to get a couple of crosses in this winter too; if I can get a fruit to set.

I should have the space to maintain 4-6 clones. I'm looking for material that produces: orange, heavy, long stem squash, and/or vines with short internodes and small leafs.

I would really like to acquire material from Josiah Brandt, if you see this please email me lmd4833@truman.edu.
