Subject:  Please Help Me Identify Leaf Problem

I've got a leaf issue that I haven't seen before. Showed this video around to a couple of experienced growers and they also couldn't identify the specific issue. On one of my plants around the end of July the leaves near the stump started turning a goldish color near the stem and then slowly the leaf would die. Eventually it started making its way down the main vine. The vine itself isn't effected and seems fine. After some time, the side vines started being effected. Now my daughter's plant is showing the same thing, but on her plant it started at the vine tip on the main and is working slowly towards the stump. It has been a problematic season for me and I'm less concerned about this season and want to make sure this isn't something I'm going to have to deal with again next season if I can help it.

Have you seen this before and can you positively identify what might be causing this? It isn't yellow vine disease. I've had that before and it shows up at the vine tips first and then the whole plant gets consumed. This is something different. The following is a video of my plant that I did a couple of weeks ago. That pumpkin split (although growth was very poor) and I've pulled it since. If there is something I can do for my daughters plant I'd like to do it however. My 1985 Miller plant doesn't seem to be effected so far and it is between the other two plants.

This is the video of my plant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfQeFi4POM4

Thanks for your help!

Im sure you've looked for svbs.

looks like it could be bacterial wilt, are you having a lot of cucumber beetles?

Send link to matt D, he can identify

I lost a plant this year to the same symptoms. I thought it was YVD, one side vine leaves started changing to yellow, the rest did not. I started losing leaves near the stump. We were hit hard with a second waive of cucumber beatles in late July. I'm convinced it was the beetles that done me in. Pumpkin aborted soon after.

Wow I have never seen that before. You are right it doesn't look like YVD. If I had to guess, My guess is that it is caused by an abiotic factor(s). Like a nutrient excess or deficiency. I am really interested to hear what others think.

I've seen one cucumber beetle and one squash bug this year. We don't have svbs in Colorado.

Bacterial wilt to some degree does fit. The leaves do go limp when it gets sunny, even when it is not overly hot and they get back into shape in the evening or when it gets cloudy. However, does that gold color appear on the leaves with bacterial wilt?

I did send the video to Matt Debacco and he wasn't able to identify it.

Those are classic early bacterial wilt symptoms (wilting even though not that hot and perking back up when cools off)

yes the vine will start yellowing with bacterial wilt.
It usually progresses through the plant pretty quick though, so that is the part that is puzzling, that doesn't seem to fit.

It only takes one infected bug to get you, and that may explain the fact that it is only affecting one part of the vine.
