I would rent one and see if you like it. Of the two I would go with the earth quake if it actually can go 10 inches. My guess is that it can't unless the handles are on the ground.

The earth quake has 11 inch times so you would have to bury it,and the only rotate forward

if your looking to till deep look for a center tine tiller.
there was a lot of good information on here last fall about them.

Call me crazy, but I'd take an old school '80s Troybilt Horse over anything new out there (Except of course a tractor)

Baitman, if you are tall, I'd get a Troybuilt. I bought a huskvarna and it is a real nice tiller. It starts and runs great, but it won't adjust enough to my height (6'4").

I have to agree with Matt McConkie, those 80's Troybilt's (Pony & Horse) have a lot of tine speed and you can't hardly break one, they are durable. One draw back is the Pulse Jet carb in them...when they hit a decent size rock or some compacted soil...they love to take off running.
Replacement tines $75 shipped. Tines on my MTD, $200.

There are some troy bilt horse tillers in my area on craigslist most run $800, and coop your almost a foot taller than me.

Windy City, coop do you mean a new troy bilt or the older models

I bought a Troybilt Horse in the mid 80's it is a super dependable unit. My neighbors all love it. But to me six inches deep is it sweet spot any deeper any you really have to work at it. I go and rent a mid tine tiller when I want to get 10 of 1l inches.

Well I couldn't find an old troybuilt pony (like I had before) so I went new..still an upgrade from all the rest..the old ones had better tines...no bolts..weeds didn't hang on as much!

I till ten inches deep once I modified the rear housing... Lol mine is not stock anymore..... I even played with the governor now she is always on real wide open throttle... I didn't buy mine at a big box store went to a local dealer... The model above mine has the provision for electric start.. I didn't see the point of electric start.... I till about 10,000 sq ft a few times a year with it... Only issue is I have been snapping the drive tire sheer pin s funny eh.. Try tilling one wheeled... I keep spares in the truck...

Agree with Matt and the others
Old Troy Built. Mine even came with chains and a snow plow attachment.
But sad news in my patch; blew the crank shaft this summer.
New engine I guess. Wondering what to put on. The local small engine guy says to get a Honda motor for it. I'll till with the old front tine machine for the cover crops and then have the winter to think about it.

The depth of the mid tine would be nice, but they look like torture devicesanyone used one ? I know some places rent them out so I would think their easier to use than they look

Get a dual Rotating Rear Tine Tiller . You can not go wrong. Turning under cover crop with forward, deep tilling with counter.

I've looked at the new troy's right beside a new huskavarna, The Troys are more adjustable to a tall person. My huskavarna does a great job, don't get me wrong. But once those tines sink in, I have to bend way over to hang onto the handles.
