Even if the pumpkin hangs off the sides of the scale which any big pumpkin will do the weight still registers on the base of the pumpkin resting on the scale. Do you weigh less when you stick your arms out? Lol you have much to learn about physics young Jedi.

I suggest 5x5 platforms if possible
It could spread out the PSI on that pumpkin so it'll be less likely to incur damage.
I think growers would appreciate that a lot.

I will respectfully disagree until there is more than 1-2 pumpkins even at the biggest events that actually could use a 5 x 5 scale.

Who's going to pay for the crane to move the 5 x 5 scale? LOL. Have any of you ever lifted a 4 x 4 scale? A 5 x 5 scale would be nearly double the weight?

Most pumpkins in the 420-440 inch range are still nearly 100% within a 4 x 4 square. That is the actual part of the pumpkin in contact with the ground. All the 6 x 6 pallets do is hold up the portion of the pumpkin already held up by AIR....and make it a royal pain in the butt for those that have to move them around on weigh-off day with pallet jacks / etc.

Ya Chris stop pallet jacking them... Get a fork lift... I mean 2000 pound kins will move real hard on a pallet jack... You will need forklifts this year

What's going to happen when someone sets a pumpkin down on a 4x4 scale that is 5x5 and it busts the pumpkin that was previously deemed sound? This needs to be addressed before this happens.

Let's face it, the strong part of the kin (the sides) won't be supported and the weight will be only on the very bottom for the first time in the kin's life.

Having 4 kins in our area last year that were bigger than 4x4 (the part touching the ground) we ordered a 5x5 scale, and will again this year.

As for moving the scale, you aren't lifting 1500 plus lb kins by hand, so why would you have to move the scale by hand?

As for oversized pallets, they can be easily handled with a pallet jack by putting a regular pallet under it. That way the pumpkin is supported and the pallet jack fits safely into the regular pallet.
