Got garlic mustard in your patch? It slows down the growth of other plants. Total news to me.

"Garlic mustard is also allelopathic, producing chemicals that inhibit the growth of other plants and mychorrizal fungi needed for healthy tree growth and tree seedling survival."

Check out article online. http://www.kingcounty.gov/environment/animalsAndPlants/noxious-weeds/weed-identification/garlic-mustard.aspx

It is in the mustard family just like the stuff we use for cover crops. I have been fighting it in my timber the past 5 years. I had it mostly controlled until this spring when it showed up all over. I spent several hours chopping with a hoe and spraying glyphosate. It can hurt and eventually kill trees that depend on mychorrizal fungi and take over the entire understory. Nasty stuff.

Regular garlic is good. It repels bugs. It is the mustard plant that smells like garlic when crushed that is bad and highly invasive.

My patch is crawling with garlic mustard, and no matter how much I weed, more appears. This could be the reason why I can't grow huge pumpkins in spite of doing everything I can.
