Too bad. It's cool to see my seed do solid numbers. Did it rain hard the day before it blew up? Sometimes if it rains a lot when the soil is on the drier side, the pumpkin can split from the growth burst. Important to keep the soil moist.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It really sucks losing your best pumpkin. I know as I've had this happen to a few myself over the years. Hopefully your other pumpkins will grow well & make it through the rest of the season. Looking forward to seeing you at the weigh offs. All the best.
Cheers,
Jane & Phil

Sometimes it just happens. You may find that there was a dill ring (i.e. a crack on the inside of the pumpkin) and as the pumpkin grew the crack got bigger and finally intersected with some ribs in the pumpkin. If you grow long enough it eventually will happen to you. What is said before is spot on. Even and consistent watering and fertilization is key so you don't get spikes in growth. Some pumpkins I think are pre-dispositioned genetically to get splits, but managing the water and fertilizer can help mitigate that. Around day 50+ this starts happening the most.
