So I see at least 2 HEAVY HITTERS (oh my, did I say heavy hitter?) using supplemental light at night. That's pretty cool- did I miss a discussion in wilkes barre about this? Was curious what the thought behind it was- just more photosynthesis? does the whole plant respond even if the whole plant isn't lit up?

A lot of great knowledge comes from that community, but a pot plant (even the big onez) are a lot smaller than a A.G. That's why I'm asking if it has been shown to be effective?

I guess it doesn't rain in Ohio? Those systems get hot.. and a rapid cool down they don't like... But this ought to be interesting for sure.... I have done this with a 250 security spot that was on all night. The plant went 10 feet up and grew around the light even buring the leaves... theZe things love light....

Unless you got twenty 1000w HPS lamps hanging 3 ft over the plant and surround it with reflective aluminum foil I can't see how it would make a major impact except on your electric bill. And if you're ready to go that nuts I think the money would be better spent on CO2. But hey I'm no heavy hitter lol.

Haha I pulled that out my you know what and then I just saw Cecil is using 4 1000w HPS lights now. Cecil I wish you a new pb and more but I am not with you in theory. Problem is you're doing so well we won't know if it was the lights or just your soil and normal hard work.

Cleaning the bulbs may be a daily event. Bees in particular are attracted to HPS lights.

How do you protect those lights and lamps from rain ? I would think those hot lights would blow if water got on them ?

lol, yes we are a little crazy....
Our mentor (Dr Liggett) has been using these HPS lights for many years.
We have teen using them for the last 3. PB increased 200 first year, 400 second year, can we hit 600?
We put the lights 4 ft above the youngest leaves. The red spectrum of the HPS targets fruit growth.
We usually put the lights up when the fruit starts on the down turn of the curve. Weights typically increase by 4 to 6 lbs per day after the first night.
As for the rain, the hoods protect the bulbs, never had one explode, and we put a Rubbermaid container over the transformer (and set it up on bricks to keep it off the ground.
If you still question if it works or not, drive around and look at corn and soybean fields near a street light. There is a noticeable difference in the size of plants and fruit as well if you get out and look closer.

As far as cost, Orangeneck got me thinking. Our electricity rates are relatively low at 9 cents per kiliwatt hour. To run Cecil's 4 lights for 4 hours at 1000 watts each over my patch would cost $1.44 per day...worth the extra few hundred pounds for sure.
Here's an electricity calculator...what does 4000 watts for 4 hours cost most of you per day?

Our bill goes up about $42 a month when I hook up the lights, some of that is fees -- not all electricity. They are attached to my outbuilding which is on a separate service from the house.

They use this bad boy at Safeco Field to keep the infield green. Imagine one of these in your patch.
