Seeking a clarification of the rules... Let's say I bring two fruit to a GPC weighoff. The ugly one weighs 999 pounds and a beautiful orange HD contender weighs, let's say 800 pounds. I want to keep the 999 pounder because it puts me in the top-10 for the weighoff. The smaller one becomes EXH. Is the smaller one still eligible for the HD award?

The one thing I seem to remember is that the HD is at the discretion of the weighoff organizers. Some hold a vote among attendees, some use judges, etc., so I probably need to ask them.

Probably depends on individual site rules. Back before they were calling it the HD award, our site gave out a prize for prettiest and ugliest pumpkin. Ralph Trumm won prettiest pumpkin with a 900#+ orange beauty exhibition entry.

Interesting. Before I asked I was thinking "no" but I wanted to get some opinions. The thing to take away from this is "make sure you clarify the rules before weighoff day."

It all depends on the individual weighoffs and have heard arguments from both sides of this coin. Both sides have valid points too.

Some weigh-offs allow multiple entries, some don't. Some will let you bring "extra" exhibition fruit, some won't. Since the GPC supports this award, the Howard Dill should be for an official GPC entry at the Weigh-Off you choose to go to.

At our team-pumpkin weigh off at Woodstock Fair , we will display exhibition or DMG but they are exhibition only. No awards. Just to show appreciation to the grower for his or her hard work.
