I hate changes to the OTT chart but I am getting a feeling this year that from around 260 to low 300's inches the weight chart does not correctly reflect the weight. I have a hard time believing that Days 25-32 my pumpkins are doing 50 pounds a day. I realize it is only a guide but based on past experience these things grow on a fairly predictable curve, not a large peak at day 28 and then level out and fall back into the normal curve as you get to D38. Just my observation this year. I could be totally wrong, which I usually am when I throw stuff like this out there.

I don't like the changing of the chart

It is like moving the outfield fence further out every year and trying to compare home runs from one year to the next.

The problem with the chart is that it is based on mature pumpkins. This means that growing fruit, which are likely to be less developed than a mature fruit, will go under the chart, and thus will probably be putting on a bit less weight than what the chart tells you.

The real problem is (in my opinion): you want something for comparison, but you don´t want to compare OTT measurements as they are. The chart itself does not change your pumpkin and it does not change the actual weight of your pumpkin (and you even don´t know whether it would be + or - or ++ or -- or almost on chart (to whatever chart you might have picked). For comparing your current data with previous years, simply stick with your favorite chart or simply compare OTT inches.

Pumpking is spot on, all I do is compare Ott to my previous years of growing on the same day, I could care less if my fruit is est. 1500 pounds as long as I'm ahead of last year that's all that matters to me.

I use three separate charts, just for fun. My excel spreadsheet does the math from pre 2013. I also have the Team-Pumpkin 2013 standard and enhance charts. The enhanced chart gives you a range in weight, which is probably a better approach.

From 260 to 310" OTT the chart averages about 1.2% heavy or about 4 to 8 lbs heavy (on fruit that are ~350 to 750 lbs). Any individual fruit could be off by as much as 20% or more versus the average. Although roughly 2/3rds will be plus or minus 10%-to-chart.

But Ashton is right that that is on fruits at official weigh-offs at the end of the season. Could be somewhat different for mid-season fruits.

If it were my pumpkin, I'd guess that I made a mix up in the OTT measurement at the beginning or the end of the period, or a mistyped into the calculator. 267 vs 276 is pretty easy to do.

If that's not the case for you, people do see 50lbs (estimated from the chart) per day on some pumpkins. Maybe you just had a good week!

The proof will be in the pudding. Let's see how those reporting these huge weight gains end up when the pumpkins hit the scales. it may well be that we will need updated charts if 2,000 lbs plus is the norm. I wish!
