I was counting my secondaries and number of leaves (ah come on...we all do it) because years ago when I joined this madness, a big name well respected grower posted once that he figured "each leaf on the plant will give you 0-5 lbs of pumpkin in the end". So when I heard that I fugured I'd need a plant with at least 100 leaves to grow a 300-500 lb pumpkin...
This year 1 plant is roughly 20' x 30' or 600 sq ft and it has a leaf count of 450 leaves while my other plant has a smaller area and covers 15' x 20' or around 350 sq ft and has a leaf count of about 650 leaves.
How many leaves do you generally have on your plants and does anyone think this old theory is still valid?

Lol...well I use shortcut math and just count number of secondaries and then average number of leaves per secondary...

My count is ... The patch is full that has to be enough... I have so many leafs that when I water 300 gallons I feel only 150 gets to the ground.. I sure need to hook up zone number 2 soon.. Under canopy rotor system makes it rain.

I'm going out in my patch to cut 50% of the leaves off all my plants in order to align with my pumpkin's eventual weights.

my 814.5 last year grown on 150 SF had 198 leaves (I counted them) so that is 4.11 pounds per leaf.
