After my pumpkin sets, my main growth & secondary growth has slowed considerably. I sent out a tissue test waiting for my results. I suspect this is somewhat normal. I have bumped up my ferts with some nitrogen & have seen secondary growth coming around on 1 plant well, the other 2 are responding but slower.just looking for thoughts- my secondaries and mains have been like this for 2 wks.my nitrogen must have dipped into the basement!my thoughts

How old is your fruit? It is common for the vines to slow down once that pumpkin starts really sucking the energy from the plant... Normal. Be careful with too much N but it does need some to continue growing... Remember we are now growing fruits not plants for the competiton...Or as the saying goes... Its a fruit competiton not a salad competiton.. You are wise to do a tissue test... keep us informed of your progress.... Good Luck

Todd, you've grown 1500+ - didn't the plant slow down that time? Seems like they found their sink and this could be a good thing.

Todd, it's happened to me also, the remaining secondaries just crap the bed and basically terminate themselves...usually when the pumpkin is between day 20-30 some plants do it, others not.

My main almost always slow down to next to nothing after I have a good one growing. Go with your gut Todd, you are an excellent grower. If leaves have good color I wouldn't suspect nitrogen.

After last year off Todd, I'm looking forward to seeing what comes from that patch of yours!
Mine slow down too and this just means I'm getting ready to be done burying vines like a mad man!

Pumpkins are not doing heavy gains yet/ only low 20's? I should have my tissue results Thursday/Friday. They are between 20-30 days. Hmm!

Hi Todd, My squash in 2012 did the exact same thing. It was the only time I experienced that situation here. I believe it was around day 20 all the vines after the fruit totally just about came to a halt. If I remember correctly all I tried was some fish and they were off again. My diary back then shows how all the leaves before the fruit were larger, all the leaves just past the fruit were small, and all the rest beyond that got large again. Sorry I cant help you more....Good Luck, Jeremy

Could it be that the plant ran into soil that was a bit "hotter" with ferts?..or poop?... I only ask because my plant did the same..or at least what Jeremy is describing ... I had more fresh chicken poop on that end...

They are coming around/ but it has really put a halt to any record chances for me. Still waiting for my tissue test results to better help explain/ hopefully! My leaves did go pale a bit/ still thinking nitrogen

tissue results showed dramatically low npk, after some discussion with other growers believe i locked up my soil due to over watering. Seems that i fell victim to automation. set my timer for watering & wasn't monitoring the soil as closely as i should. Plan now is to get the soil dried out, foliar until that happens, then tissue test to confirm, then hold on! going to have to pour the coals to these babies to catch up! closely watch my soil moisture from here on out. I want soil meters! which ones?

As your soil dries the plant growth is going to pick up dramatically. Becareful how much you supplement foliar because it won't take long for the soil to dry out.
