Read this thread (especially the part which deals with the 1104 Wallace), looks like the additional plant matter can´t hurt.

If positioning of the fruit is tricky (because of short stem, bad angle to the vine, thick and intractable vine), then better terminate the vine after the fruit (my two biggest AGs have been grown this way), but as long as the vine allows for creating a decent S-curve, you should try to keep the main vine growing for good, and if patch space allows you should let it continue in an X-mas tree pattern (don´t forget to bury the leaf nodes and to water this part of the plant).

we let it grow the new growth (new roots) will sustain the fruit to the end (up to 130 days)

I do both ways and if the main creates a problem....off it comes. I always try and have a minimum of 8-10 secondaries on each side and allow them to grow 15' each or longer if I am going to terminate main after the pumpkin. We grew 1126 lbs last year with no main after pumpkin and 1124 lbs with main vine let to grow after fruit ...... Conclusive ..... No, but like bubba said, both ways work.

I prefer to cut the main at the pumpkin, makes it easier for me to position and also lessens the stem stress issue. I don't always do this but I will every chance I get..

My 1203 and 1187 last year had 83'& 90' mains. I have cut some this year. One at 5 ft. past(broke) and two about 16' past the kin. One still running. Planning on cutting one at the kin when the rapid growth slows or the vine gets too tight. Trying to learn
I am sure you can do well with either

Thanks to Donkin, ( I missed it somehow when Beni first posted it) I studied this pic, looks to me like the current champ has a fairly long vine after the pkn..so I guess I'm keeping mine going ;) http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DisplayPhoto.asp?pid=7319

Big PlantZ big Pumpkins...>> ? Guess we will find out. I like to judge it on how the main is doing after the pumpkin...Currently noticing that once the pumpkin starts to kick in---30 days.. the vines closet behind the fruit start to really slow...as the pumpkin sucks more, those vines behind the fruit start to also slow behind the fruit.....ie.. vines 9,8,7 slowing down...then vines 6,5,4 until the entire plant starts being sucked dry...my theory on observation..
