for those of you that use shade cloth, what type of results have you noticed since you have started using it, good or bad?

Last year I tried to grow a pumpkin, but I thought you just planted a seed and let it grow. The plant was a runt and the sun completely fried and killed it. This year, among everything else, I have 30% shade. There is only 1 burnt leaf on the whole plant. Next year, I plant on misters too. Lol

I'm using 40% shade (which I've been told might be too much, even in Oklahoma), and it's the only way I can grow in the direct sunlight here. After what happened in 2012 with the extreme heat, and losing all plants in late July, never again in the sun without shade and misters!

I'm using shade cloth over the plastic canopy that covers my fruit. I don't switch to a white sheet directly on the pumpkin until DAP 20. I also don't use shade cloth on the entire plant but am home all day and will mist if the suns rays are too hot.

We have found that a 21% shade cloth workZ quite well for Colorado. We have 22% more UV than sea level environments. Normally Colorado has very low humidity. Shade cloth hung at 5-6 feet above the plantZ helps keep the new growth that hasnt rooted out yet from burning. Overhead misters that help with flagging during the 90-95 clear dayZ burn our leaveZ fast without it and the drops are allowed to pass through to the leaves.

It helps create a different Micro climate under the canopy. If allowed to hang too close over the canopy I have noticed a tendancy for increased PM, so a good fungal program is necessary. The biggest benefit for our state is the added hail protection as long as the hail is not too much, however a good sub structure is needed as my biggest fear is the net coming crashing down due to hail weight and smashing the plant. Green House Mega Store is where I purchase the cloth... It comes with eyelets sown in every 2 feet, so one can really strap it down. Another benefit is wind protection that it provides. If we dont get the hail, we alwayZ get the wind.

This year when spraying, I also spray over the netting. My theroy is that whatever I spray also coats the net, I like this when spraying Warrior and Bifethrin, as the bugZ can smell the potential danger and they go elsewhere :) I know this for a fact as I can see the cabbage moths...flutter down..at about 4 feet from the net, they freak out, flapping their wings desparately to GET AWAY... I love it ... Hope this helpZ out...GrowZem BIG, WeighZ'em HEAVY...
