Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle
|
I have 9 plants. 7 of them are at 'produce baby age', and between all 7 I have 47 babies as of this mornings round of pollinations. Aside from the obvious measure each one (OMG) any tips on culling these out? I got about 10 days and somebody is going to have to go. Each plant has a minimum of 6, my concern is that when cull time comes, cutting all the other off will cause the one good one I decide to keep to abort? Any truth in that, or am I worrying needlessly. It's a frocking jungle out there. LOL.

Are all those on the main vine? We have 11 plants and with ample choices on the main we are pinching off the secondary fruit before it gets going.

Wish I had that problem. Few females on the main got me late pollination this year.

Sadly, no. Only 11 are on mains. Lol Spence!!! I had ALOT of early season issues that led to late pumpkin development on mains.....so I kept everything. *face Palm* My idea is in a week if all the main babies appear healthy to slash and burn the rest. I'm more interested in finding out if I should do them in slowly or wack a couple off each day, or, or, or?

I would do them over a few days. Might take the weaker ones off right away so you can develop your sink to your contenders earlier rather than later.

Aborting is more likely occur if the plant can't feed all of the babies, not from cutting them off.
The side sets will grow faster at first and are sucking juice from your main sets (which is where you want to try and get a set). In the long run a main set will do better.
Keep one or two of the sides as your safety net until one or two of your mains are 10 days old, still shiny and growing.
Then pick the best based on position, distance, stem length, symmetry and growth and start cutting the rest off.
Good luck!
