I stopped all nitrogen applications 10 days ago in preparation for fruit set....well I am happy to say I have 2 perfectly placed pollinations 1 and 4 days old....the vines are growing full speed ahead but the leaves are telling me they are starving for nitrogen...I am so tempted to give the plant a little fish but don't want to risk an abortion....to feed or not to feed.....that is my question...?????

It's hard to get a clear answer on this topic ... I read last year not to feed before day 10-14...not sure why...aborts possibly..?.. I listened to that advice last year and got new pb by a mile.. Was that the trick?.. Dunno..coulda just been a good growing year or better genetics? .. Hard to tell...I'm in the same boat here .. Kin a few days old and seeing signs of deficiency ... I have not fed at all yet this year so I know I'm due...any ideas bubba ?..big country?...thanks...and good luck pumpkinson...

In my opinion, I would feed it. I never want to see my plants lacking anything. I have never had problems with aborts. Plus fish fertilizer is organic and has a low percentage nitrogen, it is also slow release.

I don't restart my fertilization program till after day 20 after pollinating. After day 20, back to the rotation.

If a plant is lacking I dont see how mild feedings would hurt anything.I think what happens a lot on these forums or threads is everything is taken so literal & to the extreme..I have pollinated 5 kins & 1 squash in the past 8 days.I continue to feed with my mild feedings.I havent taken my foot of the gas pedal.I think they mean no heavy feedings.Heavy feedings of nitrogen can cause aborts. However if you in temps over 85 degrees I might keep the feedings real light & in the evenings.Slow & steady keeps them green

Beni meier was asked about fertilizing(during fruit set) at the Orlando gpc show. Hes doing a continuous feed program-fertilizes to keep the conductivity within a desired range. He never changed anything around pollination cause hes got his fertilizer program dialed in. So fertilizing is ok if your spoon feeding correctly. I'm trying this in my patch-learning on job

If you plants need it, feed it. It doesn't matter if you have a fruit set or not. If you are trying to set fruit and dump the Nitrogen to them, they may abort but that takes a lot of excess Nitrogen and it sounds like your may be low. Also, don't add it all over one day and you will be fine.

Every morning I feed each plant 35 gallons of water, I put 10 tbs of fish, 5 tbs of silicate, 1 tbs of calcium... This is the first year I've been fertilizing every day & my thought was I didn't want to shock the plant once a week with fertilizers, rather a lesser dose through out the year every day that way you dont shock the fruit and possibly cause a split,,,it seem to be working as my plant are very nice looking this year.

Cojoe..... I'm feeding a coco based plant with the corresponding coco feed at EC 4.0, I don't suppose you have any info on Beni's desired reading for the subsrate at different points in the plants growth?
