Plant was doing beautifully, the main was about 7 feet out, but just noticed today a 3 inch long split about a foot from the root. Do we know what can cause this, or is it just bad luck?

When they lay down fast or have a long drop to lay down they can kink or crack or kink and crack. A crack running parallel with the vine doesn't stop fluid but can rot. Keep it dry and let it grow.

Thanks Joe, It's easy for me to keep it dry, being so close to the root, and in California, where rain has disappeared. Still a little nervous, but will make sure ALL tap roots are well-taken care of! Any other suggestions appreciated! Kurt
