A big tip of the hat to those who advised me on how to treat my 603 Muller ribbon vine.
I avoided the surgery, watered and fertilized the plant profusely, and the main vine grew out of the ribbon after 2 weeks.
Whew.

Nice, that doesn't happen very often.

Two generations of 603.5 in that 923, father and grandfather. I'm so used to seeing it my 811 is double right now and I pulled the backup 1561 yesterday even though It hasn't come out of it yet. They always do.

I think it will happen more often than you think.
We have had a couple and helped several people fix doubling plant this way. To date I don't recall a plant that I have suggested this for that didn't correct itself.

after it is about 3-4 ft long and not correcting itself (sometimes the younger plants in a cold environment do weird things and correct themselves when the warm up, so I don't mess with them until they have had a chance to correct themselves), water it very heavily, to the point of almost drowning it. the stress and extra water will make a growth spurt and cause it to split, making it much easier to terminate one of them without damaging the other. In my experience this works for a double vine, never seen a true ribbon vine in person.

Orangeneck, I did recognize the 603 as being in the 923....the magic genetics...I'll deal with a double anytime to have an orange orb from a 923, 603....I did notice the double slowed down the plant as it was making double everything...maybe next time I'll have the guts to try and pinch part of the double tip instead of waiting for a correction
