I'm having a problem... Over half of my secondary vines just don't want to come out. They never go more then a couple of inches. There are 2-3 that have vined out normally and the plant is already 9 feet long. I was wondering if anyone knows why it is happening. It is occurring on all 3 of my plants and I had the same issue last year. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Wow I was just going to post this exact message. I already have a small future giant appearing on main, but I have very little salad in front of it. Where there is supposed to be a secondary, sometimes all I get is a scruffy little leaf. I have no answer for you. Hope some one else does.

Happens every year and this is by far my worst year. My soil has been heavily saturated the last month from constant rain and shade and I think that froze them up. We've been 95 degrees and dry lately, but 1 of every 4 grows. This is my only plant too. If I had more than 5 hours of light I don't think this would happen as soil would have dried out. I haven't watered since end of April and my plant is 20 feet long now with 6 total secondaries

Smallmouth your not cheering me up. Good luck anyway. Hey maybe we'll find out that we don't need any side vines to grow a big one. (just a 40 foot main. lol

lack of loose soil or compacted. no (air) in soil especially out to sides of main' floods will do this also waterlogged

That's exactly what I have this year Don. Nothing I could do. For close to 30 days I'd sink in the patch area if I stepped in it.

Maybe use the old broadfork (16") might do the trick, this side of Iowa ta get 4" by Friday. Put extra gas in the boat today. Rain started around 10:30pm here.

Your nitrogen could be low if there has been a lot of rain and that could cause the secondary vine growth to be slow.

Maybe there should be a prize for the longest main. I will be in the running!! I want to add that we just got our first rainfall of the season a week ago. Basically a spring drought. Farmers didn't plant beans until after the rain because there was no moisture in the ground. And yes some wells went dry in the area.

Good news is now that the ground dried out, the old stalled ones in the middle of the plant are popping. Two more of them popped last night.

Cold wet soil, I have to deal with it every year up here in the Northland. It will correct itself. Fill in that space with a tertiary off the first good secondary you get.
