Xmas tree style pruning method poll on june 19 at 12.5 ft.By the look of the size of this plant in the pic i would say that cell division was the last thing on his mind?

At least it doesn´t look like Beni had terminated most of the vine growth a week before pollination. Looking at my plants right now (which currently develop the babies in their vine tips which would then probably give a pumpkin at 12...14 ft) I wouldn´t want to terminate most of their secondaries now.

It almost makes you think that having ALOT of big, healthy leaves at the end of the season was at the forefront of his mind.

Don't worry Spence, my soil won't allow this either.

@ Spence and Chris: What does your soil allow (or not) and why??? Are you talking about the area of good soil (which doesn´t allow such a growth pattern) or the composition of your soil, which maybe doesn´t allow to have a female at 12.5 ft by june 19th???

Home of happy lil plants

it doesnt allow a pumpkin to make it big for one...
but
mainly the sides after the kin filling out after a set at 12.5ft not space requirements or even timeframe issues

I have never seen anyone else sucessfully hammer home as many sides after the kin equaling in size to the vines/structure of the vines before the pumpkin. If someone out there has the picture of another over 13-14-1500lb pumpkin post it. That much plant after the pumpkin is too tricky for me

A little bit of everything Pumpking. Mostly my skill level if I had to pick one of the many things lacking. lol

Well said Spence. There does not seem to be much interest in the propagation and maintenance of leaves after the pumpkin is set.

My patches are not filled in until way after fruit set... I grow seconds after fruit set.. I'm slow to grow and fill in slow... About 700 to 750 sq ft per plant.. There is a time when I will only let main grow but normally after later than most

Spence & Chris, thank you for your replies, now I see. In 2012 I´ve let the main of my 1789 Wallace plant continue and I also tried to grow as many (and as long...patch space permitting) secondaries on that part of the main, and despite the early fruit set on a pretty small and young plant (somewhere at 9.5 ft) it wasn´t a problem at all, the vines kept on growing like usual even though the fruit on that plant had the steepest growth curve of my pumpkins so far. One thing I noticed is that various crosses with 1725 Harp genetics have a very aggressive secondary root system, that might (at least in part) explain this extraordinary plant growth.

Good post Donkin. Never saw that pic and Impressive. Looks like 2 mains grown together and tied up in middle or a mirror. That main after the pkn is giant.
