If I put up a 7' foot wind barrier fence and patch is 60' will that fence protect my patch? Isn't there a multiply like 10 to 1 or 5 to 1? So if the fence is 7 feet and 5 to 1 I would get 35' of protection.

it depends on the density of your windbreak. It can be as much as 30 times the height... Here is a good read http://extension.psu.edu/plants/plasticulture/production-details/windbreaks

I highly recommend a brick wall 20 feet tall. But then again some say I over do it things.

you pretty much need walls and a roof to stop wind.

Something that allows a little wind to pass is better than something that blocks all of it. The best thing I ever did was plant a hedge of cotoneaster around my patch. That, combined with a lot of trees that have been planted in the neighborhood have greatly mitigated the strength of the wind reaching my leaves. Of course, this is a long-term fix.

Silt fence with a snow fence does us well. You do want air flow. We grow on the edge of a 40 acre field and soybeans don't cut wind very much. Been growing them for years this way
